FAQs
Do I need therapy?
You have found your way to this page which means there’s a reason that you’re here. My guess is that something isn't quite right in your life and you feel a little lost as to how to cope or overcome it.
I don’t know what you are going through but…
Suffering in life is sadly unavoidable and something everyone experiences.
We’re not born with a default set of coping strategies for everything in life
There are people and tools that can help you navigate suffering so you can live a fulfilling, meaningful and even contented life.
So if you're suffering and you feel you need support, you're in the right place.
What is therapy like? What do we do?
We talk about your difficulties
You experience a supportive and healing relationship which is not found elsewhere in your life
You learn coping strategies to face your suffering and thrive
Therapy is about many things:
The first is I’ll help you by giving you tools I've acquired through training and experience which will help you cope with or face challenges in your life immediately.
The second is it is cathartic and helpful to express your inner most difficulties honestly with someone who is a skilled helper.
The third which is the less-known, often misunderstood and undervalued component of therapy, which is the ‘Relationship’ between me and you.
Can you remember a subject at school where you had a teacher you liked and admired? Perhaps they acknowledged you in class and put in the effort with you. You probably worked harder in that class and even cared about what you did. Why do you think that was?
It wasn't just the subject, but the person you connected with that mattered. When things involve other people in our life we care more. Humans are fundamentally relational beings and human relationships are vital for growth and change. In fact, if you look at any research on human connection you’ll find that people with good relationships live longer and those with very little human connection, live shorter and more sufferable lives.
So… We build a relationship together, one that’s built on care, trust, consistency and honesty. Because I really do care. I want the best for you and I'm ready to work hard to help you in every way I can as a therapist.
How long will I need therapy?
As long as you like. It’s your choice to work with me. I won't ever say you have to stay longer than you want to. Some people have a few weeks of support, and some people work with me for years. It's about what suits you and your needs but, you’ll never be obligated to stay with me.
Supporting your decisions is a big part of what makes therapy special. I want you to be walking away from therapy feeling like you understand yourself more and feel you can trust in your own instincts and judgements.
Does therapy work?
Absolutely, but… It depends on what you are hoping for.
It can’t perform miracles. It can’t make people fall in love with you, it won't directly change the social circumstances you find yourself in, it won't stop bad things from happening to you, and it can’t turn back the clock and stop that thing from happening that you wished never had.
It can…
Help you understand and accept the suffering which is inevitable when you're a human being.
Help you rise up against the adversities life has thrown at you
Help you build relationships with yourself and others in ways that nourish you and make life worth living.
Help heal the trauma and regrets you have in ways that are beyond what you can imagine right now.
Help you learn how to be yourself, free from the judgments and restrictions of society
Help you drop the destructive and self-harming habits of a lifetime that hold you back
Help you be present to your life in ways that naturally spring appreciation and gratitude
Help you learn to value yourself and begin to recognise that you are actually all you have ever got, so you best get in your corner quickly and back yourself up.
and… much more!
